Ten years ago, I started making art dolls, dolls that portrayed life events and people whom I have met, observed or interacted with in some way. Making the first dolls was a way to process an event I witnessed, where someone was overcome by the thought of all the labels they had accumulated in their life. Three dolls were the result of this one event and they are all on view at Omineca Arts Centre until December 30th.
The dolls are meant to be conversation starters. As a matter of fact, they have sparked conversations. Groups of people have interacted with them in the past, leaving one-line comments, as if having a conversation with the dolls. These comments have been taken and combined, creating some thought-provoking conversations. 2020 may not be the year to share pencils and paper, but I invite you to have your own conversation with each of these dolls. What are they telling you, and what would you tell them?
