The final doll on the right-hand wall (a real doll, this time, not a photo), is Iris. Here is a photo of her in our garden a few summers ago. She looks a bit more at home in the garden than she does on the white plinth in the gallery. That being said, the doll is not an all-weather doll and indoors is the best place for her to reside.
Iris (2017)
25” x 9” x 32”. Mixed
media soft sculpture with hand-painted and embellished fabric.
Iris loves to putter in the garden, like the neighbour who lived across the street from us. Her flowers bloomed throughout the entire growing
season, making her yard a riot of colours. She was always out and about, early
and late, coaxing and cajoling the plants to grow and flourish. She's moved now, but I hope the flowers continue to blossom for years to come.
This doll is an example of an artwork taking time to complete. The doll was finished years ago (2011) but wasn’t ever quite “right”. Once I found the piece of wood, though, everything fell into place and Iris came to life.
